A hybrid between Red and Silver
Maple, combining the best features of both parents; the drought
tolerance of Silver Maple and the fall color of Red Maple. Though not as
refined as Red Maple, its branch habit is an improvement over that of
Silver Maple. |
|
Autumn Flame® is the first Red
Maple to color in the fall and one of the hardiest. It reliably produces
a brilliant red, although its color doesn't hold as long as Red Sunset®,
which colors about a week later. Slower growing with smaller leaves than
most, Autumn Flame® produces a very symmetrical, rounded crown. |
|
An upright oval tree with
yellow-orange to red fall color. Norwegian Sunset® has a particularly
nice branch structure and uniform canopy structure. Its name reflects
the tree's similarity to Norway Maple in growth rate, branch structure
and leaf shape. |

The most commonly used purple-leafed Norway Maple. Its purple foliage holds its color well from spring until fall. |
|
October Glory® is a round headed selection which is the last cultivar to color in the fall. While it is less cold hardy than most cultivars, it seems to be better adapted to areas with mild winters and hot summer temperatures. |
|
Outstanding glossy summer foliage changes to tints of yellow, red, and orange in the fall. Pacific Sunset® colors earlier and a little brighter than Norwegian Sunset.® Branch structure is a little finer textured and more spreading than Norwegian Sunset.® |

This U. S. National Arboretum introduction glows in the fall with reliable bright red color. A hybrid between Red Sunset® and Autumn Flame®, it is seedless and features a very uniform, dense oval head. |
|
A rounded, very symmetrical tree with bright red flowers in the spring. Very striking in bloom. |

|
Scarlet Oak generally displays the finest fall color of the genus---deep and brilliant shades of red. |
|
This is an upright growing, vigorous oak with a strong central leader. Drought resistant and adaptable, its glossy deep green foliage and strong symmetrical shape make it one of the best looking trees all summer. |

Tree Drawings and Size Ratings |
Tree shape
and growth habit change as a tree grows. Young trees are often
upright, while older ones of the same cultivar may become spreading.
"Mature" size of a tree varies by climate, landscape site
characteristics and how long the tree lives. City trees rarely
reach the size and age of their counterparts in native forest stands.
In a city situation, few trees live more than thirty years, and those
that do generally grow slowly beyond that age. Therefore, the size
ratings and growth habits shown in this document are our best estimates
for a healthy thirty year old tree grown under average city conditions. |
